Lay Down Your Arms, Raise Your Voice

In Vienna, peace is not only a historical idea — it is something alive, present, and created every day through people, conversations, and communities.

One of the most important figures behind this legacy was Bertha von Suttner. She was a writer, pacifist, feminist, and one of the strongest voices for peace in Europe at the end of the 19th century. Her influence reached far beyond Austria: she became a close correspondent of Alfred Nobel and is widely recognized as one of the main inspirations behind the creation of the Nobel Peace Prize itself. In 1905, she also became the first woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize — a groundbreaking moment in history.

Her famous book, Lay Down Your Arms!, remains deeply relevant today. It reminds us that peace is not passive. Peace requires courage, dialogue, empathy, and collective action.

Walking through Vienna today, you can still feel this spirit. Peace and feminism continue to walk together here. Women gather to discuss the challenges we face in our societies and to ask important questions: How can we reduce violence? How can we create safer communities? How can we speak about peace in a world that often feels divided? And most importantly — what can we do together?

These conversations matter because peace does not simply appear on its own. Peace becomes part of our daily lives because people actively choose to create it. Through listening, sharing ideas, supporting one another, and building communities, we shape a more peaceful future.

Bertha von Suttner’s legacy continues to inspire new generations of peace makers, activists, writers, and community builders. Her voice still reminds us that change begins when people come together with courage and hope.

We will continue reading her words, organizing spaces for dialogue, connecting peace makers, and building communities grounded in solidarity and humanity. Because peace is not only a dream from the past — it is something we create together, every single day.
