Peace Belongs in Public Space | Windows4Peace

What if we stopped waiting for governments to decide the future of peace? What if we recognized that each of us already has something powerful to contribute—a window, a wall, a business, a community space, a voice?

This is the idea behind Windows4Peace.

The project began in Vienna, where the historic Blutgasse, one of the city's oldest streets, became transformed into a living gallery for peace. Business owners, neighbors, artists, and organizations opened their windows to display portraits and stories of peace heroes. One by one, ordinary windows became public statements. Together, they created something extraordinary: peace became visible. Because peace deserves to occupy public space. The inspiration for this project began with a simple walk. Years ago, Liška Blodgett was walking through Vienna when one window caught her attention. Inside an office, a poster displayed a quote by Julian Assange:

"If wars can be started by lies, they can be stopped by truth."

The office belonged to Fritz Fuhrmann. Liška walked past that window—but she never forgot it. That visible statement became the beginning of a collaboration. From a single message displayed in public grew a partnership dedicated to building peace. It is a reminder that we never know who is passing by.

A window can start a conversation. A message can inspire action. A visible act of courage can connect people who have never met. Peace is not only negotiated in conference rooms. It is also built on our streets, in our neighborhoods, through the choices we make every day. When we make peace visible, we remind others that they are not alone.

Imagine if every city had streets where peace was impossible to ignore. Imagine if every business, school, museum, café, library, and home contributed one window for peace. Imagine the conversations that would begin.

Public space shapes public consciousness.

If we want a culture of peace, we need peace to be present where people live, walk, work, and gather. At Peace Museums, we believe that everyone can become a peace builder—not by waiting, but by acting where they are, with what they have. A window is enough to begin.
